3 Fall Skin Concerns We See More Often as the Seasons Change

As summer fades and the cooler days of fall arrive in Minnesota, you may notice that your skin starts behaving a little differently. Changes in temperature, humidity and indoor heating can affect your skin barrier—and sometimes those changes show up as dryness, irritation, breakouts or flare-ups of existing skin conditions.

At Beautiful You Dermatology, there are a few fall skin concerns we tend to see more often as the seasons change.

1. Fall Skin Concern: Dry Skin & Eczema Flare-Ups

Cooler temperatures and lower humidity can pull moisture from the skin, leaving it feeling dry, tight, itchy or irritated. For people with eczema, the transition into fall can also trigger a flare.

A few simple changes can help support your skin barrier:

  • Choose a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser.

  • Moisturize regularly, especially after bathing or showering.

  • Avoid overly hot showers, which can also dry the skin.

  • Consider switching from a lightweight summer lotion to a richer moisturizer as the weather gets cooler.

If dryness becomes persistent, extremely itchy, cracked or painful—or your usual eczema routine isn't helping—it may be time to have your skin evaluated.

2. Fall Skin Concern: Changes in Acne

Acne doesn't always follow the seasons, but changes in weather and routines can affect it.

Summer heat, sweat, sunscreen and increased oil production may contribute to clogged pores and breakouts. As we move into fall, drier air and changes in skincare products can create a different set of challenges.

The key is not to overcorrect. Scrubbing harder, washing more frequently or piling on drying acne products can irritate the skin barrier and sometimes make things worse.

Instead, stick with gentle cleansing, non-comedogenic products (which is just a fancy skincare word for won’t clog your pores) and a consistent skincare routine. If you're experiencing persistent or worsening acne, a dermatology provider can help determine which treatment options may be appropriate for your skin.

3. Fall Skin Concern: Irritated or Sensitive Skin

Does your skin suddenly sting when you apply a product you've used for months? Are you noticing redness, rough patches or increased sensitivity? Seasonal changes can sometimes make skin more reactive, particularly when the skin barrier becomes dry or compromised.

This is a good time to simplify your routine. Focus on gentle cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection, and consider temporarily cutting back on products that may be irritating your skin.

And yes—you still need sunscreen in the fall. UV exposure doesn't disappear when summer ends.

Give Your Fall Skincare Routine a Check-In

Your skincare routine doesn't necessarily need a complete overhaul every season. Often, a few thoughtful adjustments are enough.

As we head into fall, pay attention to what your skin is telling you. You may need a little more moisture, a gentler cleanser or an adjustment to products you've been using throughout the summer.

And if a rash, breakout, dry patch or other skin concern isn't improving—or you're simply not sure what's going on—we're here to help.
